Myers Cocktail: What Is In It, What Does It Do

Over the past few years intravenous (IV) vitamin therapy has skyrocketed in popularity for several uses—including boosting the immune system, achieving healthier skin and hair, or losing weight. But one IV infusion in particular is being used more than ever: the Myers Infusion, also known as the Myers’ Cocktail. It is a form of IV micronutrient therapy, named for the late Dr. John Myers who first developed the infusion back in the 1960s.

The Myers Cocktail is an infusion of multiple vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium and magnesium. It was originally developed by Dr. Myers to treat symptoms of chronic medical conditions such as asthma, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and migraine.

In recent times, the Myers’ Cocktail has been popularized by Dr. Alan Gaby, author of Nutritional Medicine.

In his research, Dr. Gaby found that many of his patients living with acute asthma attacks, migraines, fatigue, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, seasonal allergies and more all responded well to IV infusions of the Myers’ Cocktail.

The infusion works by increasing the blood concentration of several essential vitamins and minerals to a higher level than that which can be achieved when taken orally—a concept known a bioavailability.

When nutrients are given intravenously, the levels of the vitamins in the bloodstream are temporarily increased so that the nutrients are directed into the mitochondria where they are active. This temporary boost frequently “kick-starts” the cells, so that energy is produced more efficiently in them.

What’s in the Myers Cocktail:

Each of the vitamins and minerals contained in the Myers’ cocktail are important in their own way. Magnesium and calcium aid in the normal functioning of nerves and muscles. The vitamin B complex aids in metabolism and conversion of food into energy. Vitamin C aids in the protection against cell damage.

According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), 7 out of 10 of Americans don’t get enough magnesium from their diet. Low magnesium is associated with some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia such as muscle cramps, weakness, insomnia and fatigue. If magnesium intake levels are low, the body will release magnesium from bones, which is our major source of magnesium storage in the body. This will deplete calcium from bones in the process and contribute to osteoporosis. Low magnesium levels have also been linked to hypertension and asthma.
