Ketamine Therapy

Ketamine Therapy

Hailed as the biggest breakthrough in over a half century, ketamine therapy is quickly gaining recognition for its fast-acting and highly effective relief of symptoms related to mood disorders and chronic pain.

Developed and approved by the FDA as an anesthetic in 1962, Ketamine has been commonly used on battlefields, in operating rooms, and in pediatric medicine for minor procedures.

Beginning in the 1990s, researchers at Yale Medical School began looking at the potential for low-dose ketamine therapy to help patients with treatment-resistant depression. Affecting nearly a third of depression patients, treatment-resistant depression occurs when multiple antidepressants fail to bring relief of symptoms.

What they found exceeded their wildest expectations. Among those with treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and suicidality, over 75% found relief of symptoms. Moreover, they discovered through brain imaging that ketamine spurred the growth of new neurons in the brain that had been damaged by years of depression and anxiety.

KETAMINE INFUSION THERAPY: A new hope in the treatment of major depression

This remarkable feature of ketamine means that the benefits can last even when it is no longer in the body. In fact, many patients feel the benefits of treatment for weeks, months, or even longer.

Ketamine has been proven to be an effective treatment for:

  • Major depression
  • Anxiety disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Suicidal Ideation
  • Chronic Pain

How does the treatment work?

Ketamine infusion treatment at Nova Vita Wellness Centers applies the same protocol as used in the Yale study, consisting of six infusions over the course of 10-14 days. During this time, our team will work with you to monitor the effects of the treatment, provide support and collaborate with your primary mental health provider to help you meet your treatment goals.

Prior to starting the treatment, you will have a consultation with our clinical team to answer any questions you might have and determine if ketamine therapy is right for you. If the decision is made to proceed with treatment, you will usually be scheduled to receive three treatments per week for two weeks. If deemed appropriate, treatment can begin immediately following the consultation.

To reduce the risk of nausea, we ask that you refrain from solid food or milk products at least 4 hours prior to treatment.
Our highly trained clinical team will provide a calm environment to help you relax during the infusion. If you wish, you may bring a personal pillow or blanket, though we do not recommend using any devices (e.g., phones, tablets) as treatment tends to be most effective when there is no distraction.

While the benefits of ketamine therapy can be life-changing, it is important to understand that it is not effective in 100% of cases and there is a risk that the relief of symptoms may require maintenance infusions over time. While some patients are able to discontinue their current medications (under the guidance of their primary mental health provider), others may find that ketamine therapy improves the effectiveness of their current medication.

FAQ

Ketamine infusion therapy has been proven to redevelop the neural pathways in your brain that have been damaged by debilitating mental health or chronic pain conditions.

Ketamine causes an increase in neurotransmitters like glutamate that help to build new pathways in the brain, improving function in areas of mood, sleep, and more.

Ketamine is different from other medications in that it triggers reactions in the cortex that enables brain connections to regrow. This allows for long-term effects that last even when the ketamine is no longer in your system.

Ketamine is a new, fast-acting therapy for those with treatment-resistant unipolar and bipolar depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, suicidal drive and chronic pain.

Prior to starting your ketamine therapy, you will need to undergo a consultation with a member of our clinical team to ensure that ketamine treatment is appropriate.

A full course of treatment is 6 sessions over a period of 10-14 days. The cost of treatment is dependent on a number of factors, including the duration of treatment selected, whether your insurance will be able to support a partial claim, and eligibility for discount (e.g. veterans or first responders). Please contact us for a no-obligation telephone consultation to learn more.
